STATEMENT OF NEED
Acromegaly is a rare disease, with a prevalence of approximately 60 cases per million, though some sources indicate a higher prevalence (Brue et al, 2023; Ribeiro-Oliveira et al, 2021). The condition is typically caused by a growth hormone (GH)–secreting pituitary adenoma (Giustina et al, 2024). Excess GH leads to overproduction of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), causing abnormal tissue growth (Siegel et al, 2024; Ribeiro-Oliveira et al, 2021). Acromegaly diagnosis is often delayed by several years due to the slow progression of symptoms (Brue et al, 2023). Diagnostic delays can result in increased comorbidities and reduced quality of life, and for those with the longest diagnostic delays, increased mortality (Esposito et al, 2020; Giustina et al, 2024). This educational guide will provide key insights into the timely diagnosis of patients with possible acromegaly.
