STATEMENT OF NEED

Acromegaly is a rare condition with a prevalence of 70 to 90 cases per million persons (Aagaard et al, 2022). It is caused by overproduction of growth hormone (GH), usually by a pituitary adenoma, leading to excess insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and abnormal tissue growth (Giustina, Biermasz et al, 2024). The goal of acromegaly therapy is biochemical remission, which is the normalization of GH and IGF-1 (Giustina, Biermasz et al, 2024). Surgical removal of the tumor causing excess GH and IGF-1 is the primary therapy for acromegaly if the tumor is resectable, but about half of patients require lifelong medical treatment and/or adjunctive therapies to maintain long-term normalization of IGF-1 and GH levels (Katznelson et al, 2014; Giustina, Chanson et al, 2014; Melmed et al, 2018; Giustina, Uygur et al, 2024). Some patients still do not achieve disease control with available medical therapies (Giustina, Uygur et al, 2024). This educational guide will explore consensus recommendations concerning post-surgical treatment and assessment of therapeutic response for patients with acromegaly.

Endocrinologists, primary care physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of patients with acromegaly.
