STATEMENT OF NEED
Molecular testing is a critical component of non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) care, with NCCN guidelines recommending testing for driver mutations and immunohistochemistry (IHC)–based markers, including human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) (NCCN, 2026). With targeted treatments available for HER2-mutant NSCLC, optimal utilization of predictive biomarker testing with tissue biopsies and ctDNA liquid biopsies has become crucial for therapeutic decision making (Yang et al, 2022). Oncology nurses play a critical role in the biomarker testing process, including patient education, specimen collection, clinical trial screening, and communication with the multidisciplinary care team (ONS, 2022). Module 1 of this Clinical Insights Microlearning Series will explore how to interpret HER2 tissue and ctDNA reports to inform treatment approaches in NSCLC. It will feature insights from Soo-Ryum (Stewart) Yang, MD, Assistant Attending Pathologist and Co-Director of Clinical Biomarker Development in the Early Drug Development Service (Solid Tumor) at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, with oncology perspectives from Zofia Piotrowska, MD, MHS, and nursing perspectives from Victoria Sherry, DNP, ANP-BC, AOCNP®.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Oncology nurses, oncology nurse practitioners, and other healthcare providers involved in the management of patients with non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
Interpret HER2 testing results to confirm mutation status and next steps in coordination with the oncology team
REGISTRATION
There is no fee to participate in or claim NCPD credit for this activity.
PROVIDED BY
JOINTLY ACCREDITED PROVIDER
In support of improving patient care, i3 Health is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
Nursing Continuing Professional Development
A maximum of 0.5 ANCC contact hours may be earned by learners who successfully complete this nursing continuing professional development activity. This activity has been designated for 0.3 contact hours of pharmacology credit for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses.
Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 15824, for 0.5 ANCC contact hours.
ONCC RECERTIFICATION
The program content has been reviewed by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) and is acceptable for recertification points.
ONCC review is only for designating content to be used for recertification points and is not for NCPD accreditation. NCPD programs must be formally approved for contact hours by an acceptable accreditor/approver of NCPD to be used for recertification by ONCC. If the NCPD provider fails to obtain formal approval to award contact hours by an acceptable accrediting/approval body, no information related to ONCC recertification may be used in relation to the program.
OCN®, CPHON®, CBCN®, AOCNP®, AOCNS®, TCTCN®, ROCN®, and BMTCN® renewal candidates may apply 0.5 ILNA points toward:
Oncology Nursing Practice (OCN®, CPHON®, AOCNP®)
Symptom Management, Palliative Care, Supportive Care (OCN®, CPHON®, AOCNP®)
Treatment (AOCNP®, CBCN®, CPHON®, OCN®, ROCN®)
Please note that some of the course content applies to multiple content areas. The numerical value above indicates the maximum amount of points that can be claimed in each domain. The total amount of ILNA points claimed may not exceed the total amount of NCPD awarded from this course.
